Identity & Purpose

The Labour Geography Research Lab studies the spatial dimension of labour related concepts at the national, regional and local levels.

In the broader perspective of fields like the nature of work, the relationship between crises and employment transformation or the workers’ response to changing conditions, the Lab focuses on youth unemployment and inactivity, various forms of underemployment and precarious employment.

In doing so, the Lab’s approach draws heavily from Critical Geography and space-sensitive Political Economy, with data findings being read through the lens of Critical Realism. The Lab employs a variety of methods ranging from quantitative (including Location Quotient, Flexible Contractual Arrangements Composite Index, Big Data and large dataseries management) to qualitative fieldwork (including unstructured and semi-structured interviews, focus groups, participant and non-participant observation).

The Labour Geography Research Lab works under the Department of Geography at the University of the Aegean in Greece. It currently hosts 3 PhD candidates, 2 postdoctoral researchers and academic staff from the University of the Aegean. Around the Lab an ecosystem of researchers engages expertise and experience from various disciplines including Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Regional Science, and Economics.
